There are as many towns in Delta state as there can be. Just like other states in Nigeria, they are usually sectioned into local governments. Delta is a state in Nigeria, with its location in the South-South region. Asaba is the state capital. And it is on the northern part of the state. Further information on Delta puts its population at 4,112, 445. In addition, the male population is 2,069,309. Meanwhile, the females are just slightly behind at 2,043,136.

On the other hand, Delta state is an oil and agricultural producing state. This is because of its regional position in the South-South geo-political zone. Also, it has an estimated area of 762 square kilometres. That is 294 square miles. Meanwhile, Warri has a total land area of 16,842 square kilometres. To clarify, that gives 6,503 square miles. Warri is located on the Southern end of the state. It happens to be the most populated town. And is also the epicentre of economic revenue for the state.

 History of Delta State

Delta State was born on the 27^th of August 1991. It was however carved out of the former Bendel State at the time. The final decision about this came about from an agitation. That is to say, the people of the old Delta province made a request for a separate state. Even after this, they made another request proposing “Niger State”. This, however, comprises of Asaba and Aboh. They were divisions of the old Midwest region. After that, Gen Ibrahim Babangida chose Delta state and Asaba as the capital.

Asaba, as the proposed capital, was virgin land. This land lies within the heart of two divisions that constitute the Northwestern lower Niger. Besides, Delta was once integrated into the Mid-western state. As this took place from 1963 to 1976. Afterwards, Bendel followed suit from 1976 to 1991. The name Bendel helped to reflect the integration of both states. As its combination (Ben-Del) was coined from the old Benin and Delta provinces of Western region Delta. And gradually they formed the towns in Delta State.

There are 25 local government areas in Delta State. They are however all divided into districts;

 Delta Central Senatorial District

The total population for this district is 1,575,738. Although, this is according to the 2006 census.

 Delta North Senatorial District

Here, there are 1,293,074 people. After 2006, the population has certainly increased.

 Languages

The 25 local governments in the state speak different languages. Albeit, some share the same dialect. This is because of the proximity to each other. It is also due to the common features.

• Enuani: The only local governments that speak this language are Aniocha North and South.
• Izon: A few areas in the state speak Izon. They are Burutu, Bomadi, and Patani. While the others are Warri North an Warri South West.
• Urhobo: Several people across Delta speak this language. As it is more common than most. Firstly, there is the Ethiope East and West. People from Sapele, Udu, and the Ughellis also speak Urhobo. There is the Okpe and Patani and lastly those from Warri South.
• Ika and Isoko: Ika is a language spoken by just the people of Ika. That is those from Ika North East and south. Similarly, the Isoko language is also spoken by its people. Those from the Northern and southern part of Isoko.
• Ukwani and Ndoni: These languages belong to the people of Ndoka. However, Ndokwa East speak both languages. Meanwhile, Ndokwa West speak only Ukwani.
• Itsekiri: This is a language that’s popularly spoken amongst the Warri people. Basically, the Warri North, Warri South, and the Warri West.

 Tourist Attractions

There are several interesting places to see in Delta. They are scattered around different towns Delta State.

• The Nana’s Palace:

  

  This historic palace was built by Chief Nana Olomu of Ebrohim. In the 19th century, he was a powerful indigenous trader. And he traded with the British at the time. Even though the relationship later turned sour, he eventually threw in the towel. Although he was exiled to Ghana, some of his personal things are still in the grand palace.

• The Mungo Park House: It is presently the site of the National Museum in Asaba. The Royal Niger Company (RNC) were responsible for the construction in 1886. Afterwards, they were used for several purposes. Some of which are; as a military house, the RNC constabulary building, and a colonial administrative headquarters. Another of its use was as the seat of the Urban District Council. And it was seldom used for this purpose.
• The Niger Bridge:

  

   The Bridge is a historical monument. It is a beauty to behold. Also, the bridge connects the Western part to the Eastern part of Nigeria. The construction was done in 1965. And it cost £5 million. During the Civil war, it got damaged but it eventually got repaired.

• Lander Brothers Anchorage: The complex has its location in Asaba. It was built in memory of the British brothers. This macrocosm has a museum, a graveyard, and several artworks and writings on its wall.
