Asaga town is a famous town in Ohafia local government area. It is in Abia state south-eastern part of Nigeria. The town was founded by Ukpai Ezema Atita (Okwara). It is one (1) of twenty-six (26) villages and towns in Ohafia LGA. Asaga is close to places like Ebem, Amuke, Eziafor, Ndi-Orieke, Ndi-Ibe and other neighboring community.
There is a hilly elevation along the road that welcome people to this town. Which makes one view Asaga from a far distance. It is said that the mountain contains lot of minerals. Although, this site will favour a Ceramic industry.

The town is an Igbo speaking community. However, has a very strong tradition from Ohafia. Such as Ezi ra ali which means “compound and land”. But the “Ezi ra ali” rite is legalise for the identification of paternal descent, person, and place. The rite is about the positioning of a newborn child. Within social, terrain, temporal and spatial. Children grow and come to realise that this terrain has their history engrave in it.

Tradition in Asaga town

Another is the cutting of first teeth by the male children. While that of the female is said to be “she has ask us to stay away from farm”. However, her family must not go to farm that day. The awareness of these are not usually created by their parents. Instead they ask their relatives to check what is wrong with the child mouth. When they create the awareness of the cutting of first teeth. As tradition requires the relative is to sponsor the celebration.

The war dance (Iri agha) is also performed among age mate. Although, Okwanko masquerade and other things have been abolish because of civilisation.

The people of Asaga are not less than 115,000 in population. They are good hunters, and farmers. They are cassava, yam, water yam and potatoes producers. Others are Traders, Motorist, Tricyclist and Motorcyclist Business men and women. There are Students, Teachers, Civil servants, Medical practitioners, Lawyers, Engineers, etc in this town.

Food in Asaga town

This Igbo descendant main diet are not different from the general Igbo nature of food. So they like eating pound yam and orha soup, egusi soup, banga soup, and Okra soup. Others are archara soup, yam pottage and porridge (Awai). Foods like rice, garri, plantain, maize, jollof rice are a normal thing. Although there are other food that are not mention.

Religion in Asaga town

The majority here are Christian and few traditional worshipers. Most populated churches are Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, and Brotherhood. The Redeem Christian church, Assemblies of God, Jehovah witness and other new churches are in this town.

The  major language in this land is Igbo. Although it is somehow different from other Igbo languages. And they also speak general Igbo as well. Yoruba speakers are mostly migrant. Pidgin or broken is also common. While English is an official language.

Asaga is a beautiful place for anyone to live. The town is a civilise place in Abia state. There are both primary and secondary schools in Asaga. Social amenities and infrastructures are not left out. There is also a multipurpose hall for this town. The people also enjoy steady power supply to an extent. Even more than some of the urban cities in Nigeria.
